According to ancient records, when Empress Suiko ascended to the throne in AD593, a shrine was built at this tidal spot. This is the origin of Itsukushima Shrine.
'Miyajima in Aki no Kuni' has become known as one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, along with Matsushima and Amanohashidate. In 1996, Itsukushima Shrine was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
